Freestyle NLP - practical, streetsmart and adaptive
Welcome to Freestyle NLP.
My intention is to have this as a 'learning' site. A place useful for beginners to take fledgling steps and get their feet wet through to Practitioners, Master Practitioners, Trainers and fellow Master Trainers to hone their craft to rapier like precision.
New NLP Practitioner Training starting in Melbourne on Feb. 28th. Click here to check dates.
Why 'Freestyle'?
I think, pound for pound, the best skills in any discipline are those that you can freely adapt from first principles. Nimble elusive footwork in Martial Arts for example as opposed to the lead weight of predictable predefined patterns.
If you know how to drill down to the granite bed rock of actually how NLP techniques really work you wont be shrouded by the smoke and mirrors of formal patterns - in fact they become a stumbling block to real effective skill.
Actually, not many people know what real high octane skill looks like with this modality.
Every
- hand gesture
- eye movement
- tonal shift
- language pattern
- metaphor - real or implied
- body shift
- and much more ...
becomes vital information to be instantly interpreted, and I do mean instantly - lightening fast in the moment. There is true freedom when you learn to re-create this art every time you use it.

In what is probably a world first the AXA Financial Services company in Australia
http://www.axa.com.au/ has its own NLP Master Trainer and NLP Trainers
and accredits its own NLP Practitioners and Master Practitioners.
AXA chose to use the Freestyle NLP model as it was the only one that
could be adapted easily to Corporate Culture. AXA leads the way within
their industry with their innovative and effective behavioural skills programmes that have a clear edge over the "smoke and mirrors" of other behavioural concepts that have no real practical application.

Dynamically Creative
A Practitioner working with 5 different clients all with the same presenting problem, a phobia for example, should come up with 5 different cutting edge solutions each uniquely tuned to the particular person involved.
You are swimming against the current with a low order of skill if you are dusting off canned techniques to apply to each of them. In fact, it is a low order of myopic vision to even peer ahead to know what technique (set of procedures) you will use based on content.
Everything should come from the nuances and subtleties presented by the client / person as it unfolds. Very few trainings teach this. Most are more like an archeological dig - exhuming handout based techniques - many several years old. Participants spend more time reading and looking at their sheet of paper than they do calibrating every tiny hint of reaction with their subject.
You can't know what you are doing from one moment to the next. It is revealed as you progress - improvising Jazz comes to mind.
Freestyle NLP invites you to become more fluid and creative in your work.
There is no safety net, no step one through step 8, just you and your undaunted capacity to calibrate and change direction in a heartbeat, to truly be in the moment with skill.
My name is Peter Dawson. I have over 20 years experience:
- 1988 Practitioner
- 1989 Master Practitioner
- 1991 Trainer
- 1994 Master Trainer
I actually pre-date INLPTA. In fact I was the first INLPTA Master Trainer in Australia and the representative for the first few years. In other words, I was the gate keeper for traditional NLP. I have adapted this style over time to become 'Freestyle NLP'.
Students are now free from the manacles and shackles of pre-determined procedures and over complicated jargon. They just get on with real-time rubber meets the road tangible skills that are easy to learn and integrate.
There are many different styles, philosophies and applications in the study and use of this modality. All are welcome here.
